### Norway mourns King Harald V; Haakon VIII to take oath Tuesday

Ongoing · day 2

King Harald V of Norway died at the age of 89, ending a 35-year reign as Europe's oldest and Norway's longest-serving monarch. Crown Prince Haakon has ascended the throne as King Haakon VIII immediately upon his father's death, adopting the royal family motto 'All for Norway.' Norway declared a national period of mourning, with crowds gathering outside the Royal Palace in Oslo where King Harald lies in state.

**Why it matters**

Haakon inherits a monarchy already under pressure from a series of scandals — including his wife's ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and his stepson's conviction on rape charges — making the transition's tone as much about institutional repair as royal ceremony.

**How reporting varies**

**Al Jazeera / France 24:** Focus on Harald's legacy as an inclusive 'people's king' and reformer of the monarchy.

**Der Spiegel / Globe and Mail:** Emphasises the difficult context Haakon inherits, including the Epstein link and the stepson's prison sentence.

### Mutinous soldiers attack Niger's presidential palace and airport in third incident this year

Sustained gunfire and explosions struck Niamey's Diori Hamani airport and the presidential palace early Saturday, in what sources described to Reuters as an attack by mutinous soldiers. Security forces said they had regained control and neutralised or repelled the attackers, marking the third major assault on the airport complex in 2026.

**Why it matters**

Base 101, the targeted military airbase, hosts Niger's Russian Africa Corps partners and the unified command of the Alliance of Sahel States — meaning repeated attacks on the site test not just Tiani's grip on power but also the credibility of the Russia-backed security arrangement that replaced Western partners after the 2023 coup.

### Trump claims 'biggest oil deal in world history' giving US majority control of Venezuelan reserves

President Trump announced Friday that the US has secured majority control of more than 65 billion barrels of Venezuela's proven oil reserves, with Venezuelan interim president Delcy Rodriguez saying the deal involves development of 17 strategic fields, nearly $100 billion in private investment and a 100-year operating concession. Chevron and other US firms are reported to be close to signing field-level agreements next week.

**Why it matters**

The deal's legal durability is untested: Venezuela's constitution reserves core oil activities for the state, so the arrangement — negotiated after the US military captured former president Maduro — could face constitutional challenges that block or delay the investment and production ramp-up Trump needs to ease domestic fuel prices.

**How reporting varies**

**Trump / Rubio statements:** Frame the deal as historic, doubling US oil reserves at no cost to taxpayers and bringing prosperity to Venezuela.

**Reuters / Washington Post:** Stress that the arrangement is legally unusual and could face constitutional challenge, and that Venezuela's actual production capacity is far below reserves.

### Iceland votes on EU membership talks in knife-edge referendum

Ongoing · day 2

Iceland is holding a referendum today (Saturday, August 29) on whether to restart European Union membership negotiations, more than a decade after pausing accession talks in 2013. The race is extremely tight, with a late poll finding Icelandic voters have swung to narrowly opposing EU membership. The referendum campaign has been bitterly divisive, with debate centering on Iceland's fishing industry and sovereignty, cost of living, and security concerns — including President Trump's threats to annex neighboring Greenland.

**Why it matters**

Iceland already has single-market access through the European Economic Area, so the concrete gain from a Yes vote would mainly be currency stability and a louder voice in EU institutions — modest benefits that may not outweigh Icelanders' fear of losing control over fishing grounds, which make up roughly 40% of exports.

### Iran's economy shrinks as US sanctions bite at six-month war mark

Ongoing · day 9

At the six-month mark of the U.S.-Iran war, Iranian leaders are publicly acknowledging the economic toll, with the supreme leader urging the government to address hardship and President Pezeshkian reporting that foreign trade has dropped 35%, while annual inflation hit 66% in July. The U.S. Treasury sanctioned branches of Egypt's Banque Misr in the UAE, saying the bank's UAE branches processed over $1 billion for Iranian shadow banking networks — marking a notable expansion of the sanctions campaign to target Arab financial institutions. Iran's navy declared it has 'full control' over the Strait of Hormuz, a statement that comes as tensions in the waterway have flared following the end of the 60-day U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding.

### CIA director's Moscow visit driven by US fear Russia may test NATO's eastern flank

Ongoing · day 2

CIA Director John Ratcliffe made a largely secret trip to Moscow on August 25, 2026, meeting face-to-face with senior Russian counterparts in an attempt to persuade the Russian leadership against new provocations in Europe. Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy confirmed that the United States briefed Kyiv on the substance of a number of meetings that took place in Moscow over the last several days. Intelligence officials say Ratcliffe's visit signals real concern in intelligence circles that Putin may be planning to widen the war beyond Ukraine.

### Ratko Mladić dies in Hague prison; Serbia's Vucic demands body be returned

Ongoing · day 2

Ratko Mladić, the Bosnian Serb army commander convicted of genocide for the Srebrenica massacre and sentenced to life imprisonment, has died. Serbia is planning to give Mladić a state funeral with full military honours, according to reports. Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić accused the UN war crimes tribunal of 'uncivilised behaviour' for its handling of Mladić's death, reportedly criticising the court for not allowing him to die outside custody.

### Canada poaches US researchers as tariff war deepens

Ongoing · day 10

Detroit and Michigan border communities are suffering economically from the Canada trade war, with over $1 billion in goods crossing the Detroit-Windsor border daily now at risk, and the political fallout threatens Republican control of Congress as midterm elections approach. An opinion analysis warns that Trump's trade war with Canada could cost Republicans the midterm elections, with several Michigan races — where the tariff pain is acutely felt — potentially deciding control of Congress. Trans Mountain's CEO says the U.S.-Canada trade rift has added urgency to Canada's oil pipeline expansion plans, framing energy infrastructure as a strategic priority in the context of the trade dispute.

### Fed chair Warsh signals possible rate rise as inflation stays above target

Ongoing · day 2

Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh, speaking at the Jackson Hole symposium, warned that inflation remains too high and signaled the Fed may need to raise interest rates further if above-target inflation persists. Warsh said the Fed has 'work to do' if policymakers are not confident that underlying inflation is returning to its 2 percent target, but stopped short of specifying whether rates would change in coming months. Wall Street ended lower following Warsh's remarks reaffirming the Fed's commitment to fighting inflation, while rate-hike expectations rose in response to the speech.
