### US widens Iran sanctions to target trading partners; Pakistan reports 'significant progress' in Tehran talks

Ongoing · day 6

The Trump administration formally announced its 'Economic D-Day' sanctions package — dubbed 'Operation Economic Outcast' — targeting Iran's trading partners, with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warning countries worldwide to immediately sever economic ties with Tehran or face secondary sanctions. The sanctions package sanctioned approximately 60 entities, individuals, and vessels worldwide, including targets in mainland China and Hong Kong, but stopped short of immediately penalizing major trading partners like China, with analysts describing the action as a warning shot rather than a sweeping crackdown. China's foreign ministry responded by warning it would take 'all necessary measures' and 'firmly safeguard' its interests if the U.S. expands its crackdown on Chinese entities doing business with Iran, with Beijing denouncing what it called U.S. 'economic wars.'

**How reporting varies**

**Financial Times:** Bessent stopped short of sweeping action — the package was more warning than penalty, with no immediate penalties imposed on major trading partners like China.

**Wall Street Journal / Nikkei Asia:** Frame the sanctions as a deliberate escalation and a test of global economic pressure; emphasise Iran's currency hitting a record low.

**Al Jazeera / Reuters:** Highlight Iran's defiance and Pakistan's mediation role as the diplomatic counterweight; note that Pakistan's army chief spoke with Trump before flying to Tehran.

### UK shares SCALP missile blueprints with Ukraine; Russia threatens attacks on British drone factories

Ongoing · day 2

The UK announced it will share classified blueprints for components of the SCALP/Storm Shadow long-range missile with Ukraine, with defence firm MBDA releasing details on UK-made parts to help Ukraine assemble the weapons itself. Britain and France also pledged stronger support for Ukraine on its Independence Day, with dozens of countries issuing a joint statement reaffirming support for Ukraine's sovereignty. The UK and Ukraine signed an AI defence partnership under which Ukraine will share battlefield footage and data as training material in exchange for British AI expertise, with the technology intended to help protect both Ukrainian and British infrastructure.

**Why it matters**

Transferring production blueprints — rather than finished weapons — is designed to survive a future shift in Western political will: once Ukraine can build SCALP missiles itself, no third-party veto can cut off supply, which is why Moscow's reaction is so sharp and why the move matters more than any single weapons delivery.

**How reporting varies**

**BBC / Al Jazeera:** Lead with Russian threats and quote Fedorov at length; note Ukraine relies on US Patriot stocks now running low due to the Iran war, and Zelensky is seeking 300 Patriots ahead of winter.

**Guardian editorial / NPR:** Frame the blueprint-sharing as strategic: building Ukraine's weapons independence reduces its dependence on shifting Western political will.

**France 24 / Dr. Frank Ledwidge quoted:** Sceptical — notes none of the newly announced European anti-missile technology will be online for years, questioning whether the support is as significant as announced.

### US removes Syria from terrorism sponsor list, opening it to international investment

The US State Department formally removed Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism on Monday, ending a designation in place since 1979 and lifting the last major legal barrier to private-sector investment and international banking in the country. The Treasury also delisted Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the group whose leader Ahmed al-Sharaa now serves as Syria's president. Cuba, Iran and North Korea remain on the list.

**Why it matters**

The delisting followed a 45-day congressional review triggered when Trump notified Congress of his intent on July 8, meaning it took formal effect automatically on Monday; the speed and procedural route suggest the administration wanted the step locked in before any congressional pushback could materialise, and it gives Syria's government an immediate tool to negotiate correspondent banking relationships that reconstruction financing depends on.

### Pakistan reports 'significant progress' in Iran-US mediation talks in Tehran

Pakistan's army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi completed a daylong diplomatic mission to Tehran on Monday, meeting President Pezeshkian, Foreign Minister Araghchi, and Security Council Secretary Rezaei. Naqvi said the two sides reviewed steps to restore the Islamabad MoU — the interim ceasefire framework that expired last week — and that talks concluded 'on a highly positive note'. Pezeshkian told Munir the US must correct its 'tone and approach' rather than 'dictating terms', according to Iranian media.

**Why it matters**

Pakistan is threading a needle: Munir spoke with Trump before flying to Tehran and returned with optimistic language, but Pezeshkian's public demand that Washington change its approach is inconsistent with what the Trump administration's simultaneous 'economic D-Day' sanctions package signals — making any restored MoU fragile from the moment it is signed.

### Taiwan indicts nine in AI server smuggling scheme involving Nvidia and Supermicro employees

Prosecutors in the Taiwanese port city of Keelung indicted nine people — including one employee of Nvidia's Taiwan unit and two from Supermicro's Taiwan unit — on charges of breach of trust and document forgery for allegedly helping export high-end AI servers to China in violation of US export controls. Of the servers involved, 50 were transshipped through Indonesia, eight via Japan, and the rest were sent directly; 56 more were seized at Taiwan's border. Three defendants also face embezzlement charges.

**Why it matters**

The scheme required forging documents to make servers appear installed in Taiwan when 74 had already been delivered to Chinese customers — a compliance fraud that exposes how US export controls create pressure for elaborate deception rather than deterrence, and why Taiwan is now tightening its own export control laws beyond relying on US restrictions alone.

### Canada unveils retaliatory tariff plan as Trump threatens 50% duties on autos

Ongoing · day 9

Trump threatened to impose 50% tariffs on all cars, trucks, automotive parts, and steel imported from Canada, effective January 1, 2026, escalating the trade war further after talks collapsed. Canada announced it will reveal its retaliatory tariff measures on August 25, with Carney saying a trade deal is still possible but not 'at the expense of sovereignty' and only if the U.S. comes with the 'right attitude.' Carney accused Trump of wanting to 'destroy' Canada's auto industry, citing the threatened 50% vehicle tariffs as evidence of bad faith.

### Six months into Iran war, Hormuz traffic at a fraction of pre-war levels with 6,000 sailors stranded

Commodity carrier traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has averaged 15 transits per day since hostilities resumed on July 8 — down from a pre-war daily average of 95 — with two-thirds of transits now 'dark', meaning vessels have disabled transponders or otherwise obscured their routes, according to maritime tracker Kpler. Some 6,000 sailors and 500 ships remain stuck in the Gulf, and at least 20 sailors and dockworkers have been killed in incidents since the war began. Countries affected by conflicts in 2026 — including Iran, Russia, Libya and Venezuela — together produce roughly 43% of global oil supply, Reuters calculations show, with the current Gulf disruption running at an estimated 5 to 7 million barrels per day.

### Russian AI-guided drone killed three civilians in Zaporizhzhia, Ukrainian analysis finds

Ukrainian drone experts, military commanders and a forensic team that examined wreckage determined that a Russian drone which killed three people in Zaporizhzhia in July was guided by an autonomous AI system based on an Nvidia Jetson Orin module, not a human pilot. The drone was pre-programmed to fly to a specific service station but then selected its exact target — reportedly propane tanks — autonomously, according to the analysis. The UN and the Red Cross separately called on Tuesday for a legally binding instrument to regulate autonomous weapons systems.

### DRC and M23 agree peace roadmap; ceasefire verification mission deploys to South Kivu

Ongoing · day 14

A ceasefire verification mission — comprising representatives from DR Congo's government, the Rwanda-backed AFC/M23 rebel group, and observers from the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region — has deployed to eastern DR Congo to monitor the existing ceasefire. Despite the peace roadmap agreement, key disagreements over M23 rebels' status, Rwanda's role, and security concerns remain unresolved and could still derail the process, according to reporting on the new roadmap. After months of stalled peace talks, both DR Congo's government and M23 rebels have agreed to resume negotiations under the newly agreed roadmap framework.

### Trump plans to revoke up to 200,000 business and tourism visas held by asylum seekers

The Trump administration said it would revoke B1 and B2 business and tourism visas issued between 2016 and 2026 whose holders have applied for or are currently seeking asylum, according to State Department documents obtained by the Associated Press. The move could affect up to 200,000 people and would be the largest single mass visa revocation in US history, according to the AP; revocations would not necessarily lead to immediate deportation. The administration has already revoked more than 175,000 visas since taking office.

### Saudi Arabia agrees $7bn investment in three theme parks near Paris during MBS visit

Ongoing · day 2

One of the parks is expected to be themed around the Dragon Ball Z franchise, according to Reuters and Nikkei Asia. The theme park deal was one of a broader package of agreements spanning energy, defence, AI, and tourism signed during MBS's Paris visit, with total deals reported at more than $10 billion. Macron's decision to welcome Mohammed bin Salman has drawn criticism, with commentators questioning whether Western governments are prioritising economic interests over human rights concerns, according to Der Spiegel's foreign correspondent.

### Europe's back-to-back heatwaves have caused at least 35,000 excess deaths, incomplete data shows

Ongoing · day 2

Figures covering roughly half of Europe show at least 35,000 excess deaths from four consecutive record-breaking heatwaves since May, with Germany, France and Spain alone accounting for more than 25,000. Germany's Robert Koch Institute reported an estimated 14,000 heat-related deaths through early August, the worst on record in the country. The true total is expected to rise significantly once August data is consolidated and more countries report.

### US dipolomats to return to Middle East embassies as Washington signals no renewed full-scale war

The US State Department is preparing to return foreign service officers to Middle East embassies evacuated before and during the Iran war, with some officers potentially heading back as early as this week, according to an internal document reported by the New York Times. The move suggests Washington does not anticipate a renewal of full-scale conflict in the near term.

### France to enforce high school mobile phone ban from September

The French government said on Monday it would proceed with banning mobile phone use in high schools from the start of the new school year in September, after President Macron decided to promulgate the law despite the Constitutional Council striking down its flagship provision banning under-15s from social media. Trade unions warned the measure could be hard to implement quickly.
